One of my students from last year came in this afternoon to ask a couple of questions about topics she was a little confused about from her freshman general chemistry class at BU. After we talked about her questions, we talked about college in general and how she was doing. Some of the things she said included:
- “College is so different from high school. Now I see why you taught your class the way you did.”
- “I’m really glad about how you had us do labs.” (When my students do a lab, I demo one possible procedure and have them practice the techniques. Then I give them the objective and they have to come up with their own procedure for achieving it.) “They do it the same way at BU. When we did our first lab, I was one of the only ones who had any idea what to do.”
- “If it hadn’t been for your class, I would have been totally lost on the first test.”
- “I may not get the best grade, but I understand everything, and lots of people come to me with questions.”
