The title of this blog comes, as you have probably guessed, from the expression, “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink.” Teaching is often based on the assumption that it is possible to get recalcitrant students to “drink” what they need in order to be successful and prosperous. The reality is all too often that the horse won’t drink, even if you waterboard it.
This blog is a collection of my posts about education and about teaching science in an American high school in the early twenty-first century. Some of the entries were originally posted to the ChemEd-L or AP-Chem email discussion lists.

Please keep up the obviously great work! You remind me a lot of my own high school chemistry teacher, who was definitely a large factor in my own direction into a STEM career.
